In Japan, aesthetics are an integral part of people’s daily lives.

Their design aesthetics have evolved from their cultural roots and their definition of what beauty essentially is.

These aesthetics not only inform their art but also their virtues of human character and behavior. Therefore, for them virtue and manners can be instilled through practice and appreciation of art.

Aesthetic values have an ethical context and largely influence the Japanese culture.

A beautiful Japanese aesthetic that I’m really fond of is ‘Wabi Sabi’. It is about finding beauty in the transient nature of things, in all that is ‘imperfect, incomplete and impermanent’. A mindful approach to life, wabi sabi is to quieten one’s mind and look at nature from a discerning eye, finding beauty in the mundane and simple. It reminds us that nature, like life, keeps evolving, and the coming and going of things and people is beautiful in itself.
